WHO WE ARE
Founded in 1896 by George Venables, our butcher shop has been passed down through every generation since.
Today it’s proudly run by his great-grandson, Peter Venables, continuing a family legacy of quality and craft.

LOCALLY SOURCED
Our Beef and Lamb is sources from within a 15 mile radius of our Butchers shop, and we have sourced our pork from the same suppliers for the last 60 years.

Our knowledge of meat, traditional butchery skills and the care we put into preparing our products sets us apart. We are happy to give advice, prepare meat to suit our customers’ needs and help them choose the best cuts.

The business Established by George Venables
George Venables, having gained extensive experience in the industry, sets up G. Venables & Sons and quickly flourishes, gaining a reputation as one of Chester's master butchers.
George opens his 2nd Butcher shop in Bridge Street, Chester
Following the successful growth, George opens a second Butchers Shop in the heart of Chester - Bridge Street, there are more than 50 butchers shops on the same Chester street at this point.
George's two sons Edward & Harry inherit the family business
Following George's sad passing, the family business is proudly continued by his 2 sons Edward & Harry.
Edward & Harry's sons, John & Harry take over the running of the business
John and Harry move the business forward through a time of great change in the industry.
The business is passed to Harry's sons, Peter and Mark
John and Harry 'hand over the baton' to Peter & Mark who become business partners to move the family business forward.
G. Venables & Sons Celebrates 100 years!
With John and Harry at the helm, G. Venables & Sons celebrate 100 years serving generations of loyal businesses & customers in Chester as we look forward into a new Millenium.
Peters son Toby has joined the family business
As G. Venables & Sons celebrates its 130th Anniversary, Toby Venables joins the family business as the business moves from strength to strength, adopting innovative technologies to help business operations, complementing our tradition of classic butchery techniques.
